Go Walk Falkland ~ Maspie Den

This is the best way to reach East or West Lomond in The Lomond National Park if you are a keen uphill walker. I started the walk in the "Hidden Place" with ample parking, a parking donation is suggested at £2. Facing East Lomond, exit the car park and go right to continue on the main path. The path splits in 3 directions but keep to the centre. Continue along the no.1 cycle route until you see the sign for Maspie Den on the left hand side.

For most dogs this part can be off lead, however, as always, remember you are responsible for your dog at all times, if you are at all worried they could get spooked and run, or chase a wild animal onto farm land, then do not risk it. Once you pass through the dark tunnel the path splits- follow stone marker to go under the stone bridge. It takes around 20 mins to get to the wonderful cave waterfall. The route is all uphill and is rarely without some mud. Walk behind the waterfall and continue up the path, at the top take a left and continue heading toward The lomond hills visitor car park. There are sheep in the field to the right, and although this part of the route is surrounded by deer fence one of the gates are down, deer may be present. Go through the gate straight across the field. If going up West Lomond vere right in this field. For East Lomond continue through the next gate, follow the path right into the car park. 1. Toilets opening times here. Cross rd and head left to continue up East Lomond.

Once you reach the base of the hill there are several paths up with many branches, normally I go almost directly ahead the vere right when about half way up to go visit the trig point. The left route is more rugged and meandering. Worth noting there is possibility of livestock so be very careful, it's a steep climb. If you decide to stop at the trig point, the next section to the top is fairly easy. Rejoice when you reach the top and enjoy the fantastic views.

Knock 0.5km 10 mins off if starting at Bogward Road.

Time : 140 mins

Distance : 6.5 km

Rating : 6/10

Hazards : Occational Deer, Sheep, Steep Climb and Decent

So in conclusion ...

A fabulous walk, but the 6/10 rating is due to no poo bins, lots of livestock and the possibility of ruining your knees on the way down. Maspie Den itself gets 8/10

West Sands

The West Sands beach is the largest in St Andrews. Famous for being featured in the opening scenes of 'Chariots of Fire' it's around 2-3 miles of lovely golden sand backed by dunes. The far end features a bird watching platform and views across the Eden Estuary Nature Reserve towards Tentsmuir Forest. There are warnings in place not to walk too far. When the tide is out it looks deceptively like you could walk directly to Tentsmuir. There have been coastguards rescues when walkers discover this is not the case.
