Go Walk St Andrews ~ Coastal Path
The Coastal Path from St Andrews heading toward Boarhills. Free parking can be found at the leisure center (beware the opening times) or nearby at the lifeguard station. There is also a car park at the sailing club but it's small and the spaces are quickly snapped up. I started our walk at the leisure center and headed toward Boarhills. The path is a mix of gravel, dirt track, stone steps and steep climbs. Fairly dog friendly at parts, however there are steep cliffs with nesting seabirds and rabbits galore. I tend to keep my dog on the lead for the most part. Alternatively if you are feeling more adventurous you can walk along the beach and rocks, it makes for a better workout but can be very slippy underfoot at places and a lot of the rocks are not stable. On the map below I travelled along the top path to the rock and spindle. From this path you get beautiful view over the East Sands, it's also perfect for trying to spot whales, dolphin, porpoise and seals. Beware of golfers, the path runs along side the golf course and as you near the rock and spindle formation there is a possibility of roaming cattle. Dogs on leads please. Other points of interest along the way are the 'Maiden Rock' and a cave high on the hillside.
Time to the Rock and Spindle and back is around 90 minutes if you take into account chats with friendly caravan owners and a detour to find the well hidden cave.
Fresh water for your dog and refreshments for yourself are available from Pat at the harbour cafe.
Time : 90 mins
Distance : 5 km
Rating : 4/10
Hazards : Rabbits, seabirds, cliffs, cattle
So in conclusion ...
A nice walk, but the 4/10 rating is due to having to keep my dog on the lead most of the time. There are much better stretches of the coastal path more suitable for your pooch.
