Go Walk St Andrews ~ Spinkie Den

I started from the top of Spinkie Dan as I think this might be useful for holiday makers at Cairnsmill Caravan Park. There is is route through the caravan park that leads directly on to Spinkie Den through which you can reach the town center of St Andrews. This is a nice walk into St Andrews, however the first km has some tricky narrow and sloping paths, careful planning of where you are putting your feet.

It takes about 15 minutes and just short of 1km to reach Bogward Road, from there cross over into the Lade Braes. Keep right to follow grass path if the ground is dry, if not cross the bridge and continue til you pass the mill pond and go right when you cross the bridge to continue into town. If the weather is fine and you go the grassy route continue as follows- Join the ash path and go up the hill when you reach the houses continue on the path that runs behind them, you will find yourself in a lovely wooded area.

Once out the wood continue on the wide grassy path you will come to a fork.I suggest keeping left you won't get lost the other way but there is another little woodland walk when you head down the hill. Use the bridge to cross the burn and continue into town by going right. The path splits offering a high or low route the first is better paved but the latter runs alongside the burn and is prettier. When the path leads back up the hill and to some stairs.

Head right into town. Beware there is a corner garden with chickens. Dogs on leads please. Cross the traffic lights and turn left up city road and enter the town centre via the West port.

Time : 50 mins

Distance : 3.5 km

Rating : 6/10

Hazards : Narrow, sloping, barely used paths

So in conclusion ...

The best way to get into St Andrews walking from the caravan park, the 6/10 rating is due to the poor pathway in the first section

West Sands

The West Sands beach is the largest in St Andrews. Famous for being featured in the opening scenes of 'Chariots of Fire' it's around 2-3 miles of lovely golden sand backed by dunes. The far end features a bird watching platform and views across the Eden Estuary Nature Reserve towards Tentsmuir Forest. There are warnings in place not to walk too far. When the tide is out it looks deceptively like you could walk directly to Tentsmuir. There have been coastguards rescues when walkers discover this is not the case.
