Go Walk St Andrews ~ East Sands

The East Sands in St Andrews is one of three beaches in the area. Free parking can be found at the leisure center (beware the opening times) or nearby at the lifeguard station. There is also a car park at the sailing club but it's small and the spaces are quickly snapped up. I started our walk at the leisure center and headed toward town. There is a paved footpath if you don't like getting the sand between your toes. This is a small but dog friendly beach year round. Please note though that during the summer months the west side of the sailing club slipway is a dog free zone during certain times of day. This isn't well marked especially from the harbour end and many a dog walker has found themselves on the receiving end of harsh looks.

Time to the end and back is around 30 minutes if you take into account chats with other dog walkers and a wee hike up the hill to take in the spectacular views.

Fresh water for your dog and refreshments for yourself are available from Pat at the harbour cafe.

Time : 30 mins

Distance : 2 km

Rating : 6/10

Hazards : Rabbits Everywhere

So in conclusion ...

A nice walk, the 6/10 rating is due to certain dog walking restrictions in busy times and it not being a great deal of exercise for you or your dog.

West Sands

The West Sands beach is the largest in St Andrews. Famous for being featured in the opening scenes of 'Chariots of Fire' it's around 2-3 miles of lovely golden sand backed by dunes. The far end features a bird watching platform and views across the Eden Estuary Nature Reserve towards Tentsmuir Forest. There are warnings in place not to walk too far. When the tide is out it looks deceptively like you could walk directly to Tentsmuir. There have been coastguard rescues when walkers discover this is not the case.
